BIG TURBO Mazdaspeed 3 Exhaust Sounds Amazing!
We took my Gen 1 Mazdaspeed 3 out for some pulls and got some decent footage of the car in action. The exhaust system sounds much more aggressive with the external wastegate (EWG) setup, and with the BNR S5 Turbo having a 0.82 AR turbine housing, along with some good flow mods, making decent power on pump gas is a breeze. Enjoy the video! Please like, share, and subscribe :)

In this video we install a new Mass Air Flow sensor connector replacement harness into the Mazdaspeed 3. This issue started a few years ago when I suddenly noticed my Long Term Fuel Trims deviating drastically from what they normally were. My first thought was an air leak, but after checking things over and doing more research, I discovered that this is actually a common issue caused by the ele...

It's definitely a fun platform to have fun in! Full list of mods is in the description
Question for you, if you have aux fuel 8 port and a wot box, would you have to flat foot shift all the time even in normal driving so you dont get a lean burn?
You get a lean burn when flat foot shifting with Cobb's FFS feature, which cuts fuel injectors instead of ignition. AUX fuel would continue to spray while the stock injectors are cut during the FFS. This would cause the engine to burn the AUX fuel and cause the gear to lock out, as the engine continues to generate torque. I hope that makes sense :)
@WannabeTuners cheers, so do you have to ffs normal driving or you will get lean burn everytime you shift, or turn wot box off for normal driving
@barry9141 You will only get a lean burn when the AUX fuel starts to spray at higher MAF voltages or under boost. Just cruising around town, you can shift normally by lifting off the gas.
@@WannabeTuners aw I see, does the wot box only activate when you ffs? And is ffs bad for gearbox
@barry9141 It can cause damage to the gear box at very high torque levels, but for the most part our gear boxes are pretty solid. It will activate when it detects that the gas pedal and clutch are both pressed all the way down. The amount of accelerator pedal position before it activates can be adjusted through the WOT box software. Tuned by Nishan has a great video explaining this on his UA-cam channel.
Best video I seen of rebuilding an engine, thanks for the help.
Were did you buy the parts? Thank you in advance!
All parts were bought from my local Mazda dealership
Just tried to prime engine after rebuild - did 10 second bursts for about 30 to 40 seconds - the low oil pressure light did not go out. (Has spark plugs out and foot flat on accelerator to disable injectors). Called it a night - will try again tomorrow. What was your experience like - how long did you have to crank engine to get the oil warning lamp on dash to go out?
I went based off of my AEM oil pressure gauge. I'm not sure if the low oil pressure light will extinguish while cranking, as the oil pressure won't be as high while cranking. If I recall correctly, we only needed to crank it a few times before we saw oil pressure on the gauge. I think once we maxed out at around 35 psi, we we're good to go.
My speed3 seems to have a cover around the flanged side of the line, that the line has to route through making the install very difficult trying to install another OEM line had to cut the old one out. Has anyone else ever seen this cover protector thing so far I’ve taken three bolts out of it and it wiggles but it won’t come out.
That protective cover has to be removed if I recall correctly
@@WannabeTuners I’ve taken out 3 bolts, can’t seem to find the 4th it will wiggle forward and back but won’t come off I think I feel a 4th bolt but I haven’t been able to get at it
@@Tuckerormson I wonder if the intake manifold has to be removed? I can't remember off the top of my head. It's been a while.
@@WannabeTuners I’m thinking if I take the lower intercooler hose off I will be able to see what I’m looking at. I still have the stock top mount.
@Tuckerormson Oh ok got it. Yeah you may have to make more room to get access to that final bolt.
I have a 2012 speed 3, no smoke, completely stock.
Lol I never had smoking issues either on the the stock K04. I believe a lot of it has to do with the high oil pressure being fed to the turbos bearing system, along with having a high flowing downpipe/exhaust system, which in my mind creates a venturi effect during deceleration at mid to high rpm's. This on top of the high oil pressure being fed to the turbo will pull oil past the turbine seal where it'll burn.
When the HP fuel line develops a leak, is there any other symptom other than smelling or seeing fuel? Does the ECM throw a CEL or fault code?
If the fuel pressure drops low enough, it may definitely cause a warning lamp to illuminate. If the leak is significant, the engine could even stall out. But if that's the case you'll definitely smell gas.
@@WannabeTuners Thanks for the quick reply. Original owner of '11 MS3. I have the CS HPFL on the shelf for contingency, but perhaps another OEM part would have been better. Failures at the 90° bend seem to indicate poor mandrel bending process during manufacturing. Did you replace original O-ring and gaskets with new ones when installing the new OEM part after the CS adventure?
@CheaperEngineer Right on! Tbh I don't remember if I replaced the seal/blue o-ring. I don't think I did. It's a pretty solid seal, so long as it doesn't have any rips in it.
Did you put any thread-lock or sealant on the flywheel bolts? Workshop manual does not mention anything but torque... ? I guess as engine rotates it would be very hard for oil to gather near bolt area, because it is continuously being flung off..,
The flywheel bolts aren't exposed to engine oil. Mazda torque specs were used and no thread sealant was used.
@@WannabeTuners 2:00:38 you mentioned you put new bolts with some version of thread-lock that was already on it - did I not understand that correctly - did you just use the old bolts with no thread-lock or sealant?
@pingpong9656 If I recall correctly the new OEM flywheel bolts have a blue dry thread lock on the threads
@@WannabeTuners 1:58:09 <- I missed the bit where you actually showed them on the table.
@pingpong9656 Haha it's a bit of a long video. There's a lot of info that can easily be missed. I have a hard time remembering a lot of info tbh.
Buen video 💪🏻 hello from Argentina 🇦🇷🇺🇸
Hi, anyone know where I can get valve seat replacements for 2.0 tsi? Cheers
2010 jetta mk5, so its the ea888 gen 2 engine?
Surprised you didn't change the pistons (over the rods) since they collided with the valves. Did you rebalance the crank since the new rods are likely different weight than the old? Actually since the short block was ok you could've left the motor in the car and just fix the head, no? Ambitious job good work fellow canuck.
If you wanted to buy the most reliable stock Turbo - do you have any recommendations? Do you know if you can get original cartridge for the stock turbo? I'm thinking of upgrading or replacing the stock turbo - it works but its got 150KM on it...and with engine out of car, it's easy to replace now.
If u want to keep it stockish I know BNR and Corksport offer similar to stock sized turbos. With most of these turbos though, there is a chance that you'll have to drop oil pressure to the cartridge to prevent oil pushing past the turbine seal and burning up in the exhaust.
Which brand and type of RTV did you use and did it hold up good?
I think it was either the right stuff or permatex black, but as of late no issues.
Do you notice more vibration with the BALANCE SHAFT delete?
Yes quite a bit more, but nothing unbearable. On top of the engine having less parasitic loss, it just adds more character to the car.
When you put the oil pump in - did you have to prime it before installing? Or does it go in dry and you crank the car with starter after car is back in car? Please let us know what your experience was!
We just installed it dry. We primed the engine before first start by cranking the engine until we saw oil pressure on our AEM gauge with the pressure transducer installed into a sandwich plate above the oil filter.
@@WannabeTuners Sounds good - I did run a bit of oil threw my new pump before install, just to lube it up a bit - good to know it will self prime!
@pingpong9656 Yeah good idea to lube it up before install!
Why did you skip the part showing how to get the clutch master cylinder lines off???? I can't get the hose off the one with the blue button and I'm afraid I'm going to break something!
Just installed new pistons and rings - should they make a slight scraping sound when crank is turned by hand? Feels a bit jerky too, but still easy to turn... I was expecting total silence with oil on pistons and cylinder wall. What has been your experience? I did take out my piston to verify rings and cylinder wall were not damage - they were in great shape... Don't want to progress in the build until I know it is normal for some light scraping sounds on new rings and newly honed cylinder walls - please share your thoughts!
Yep I noticed the exact same thing. The new piston rings need to bed in with the newly honed cylinder walls during engine break in.
@@WannabeTuners Yes - I rotated it a few times, and the noise is already coming down - feels good on rotation too now. Good to hear you experience the same - gives some piece of mind! Don't want to do this twice for sure!
@pingpong9656 100% this isn't something you want to screw up lol
If this motor was having 4K km oil changes - why did it blow up? You would expect almost no wear!
I suspect rod failure was the primary culprit
@@WannabeTuners Makes sense - OEM rods must already be on the limit... good to know. Did you have to re-balance the crank when you upgraded the rods? Or are the new rods the same weight as OEM rods?
@pingpong9656 My machine shop said there was no need to balance the rotating assembly. I can't remember why though.
Hey, I had mine worked one (friend did it), but its leaking oil from the side.. how hard is it to reseal it? Do i need to just seal the side or redue the whole timing thing again?
If it's leaking from the timing cover you'll have to take the valve cover off, set the cams and crank to TDC, take the timing cover back off, and re-seal it.
I know this video is old! But man when I did this with my veloster, there was NO wiring diagram lmao! I had to get them to send me something that’s close and cross reference. Also did not do a clean install hahah but definitely soldered it all.
Haha that's awesome. How's it been working for u?
@@WannabeTuners I actually do not have it anymore! But when I did it was great! Good times man good times. Actually have a vid on my UA-cam of it shooting flames haha. @@robbinnyohood Beauty! Welcome to the platform!
The tattoo on his arm tells me. Real car mania. good!
Yeah, the most fun you can have in a car probably involves someone else too.
This job is such a pain in the ass, struggling to get the top bolt off
Yeah it definitely is a bit tricky
When you spoke about the turbo oil line, you mentioned there is no filter - it the main engine filter not in line with it? Why do you say that line gets clogged?
I've seen on some other platforms that there is a small pre-filter in behind the banjo bolt where the turbo oil feed line exits the block. This filter was not present in my engine. I think that the purpose of those pre-filters is to prevent premature wear of the turbos bearings from engine break in material. That being said, I had never had any issues with my turbos bearing system getting worn out, even back when I was still on the stock turbo.
Interesting there are no Balance shafts. Mines an FSI and I believe has them. Thinking of disconnecting, especially if bearings have worn!
There are balance shafts! They are installed within the block on each side above / parallel to the crankshaft and are chain driven.
@@WannabeTuners Yeah I asked this before watching as I expected similar to my BWA!
What is the torque spec : Cylinder head bolt Connecting rod bearing Main bearing
What's the part number or link mine rubbed off because I cleaned it with break cleaner
For which part?
@@WannabeTuners the nipple on my fuel pump assembly cracked so I need a need a whole new one.
@angelowebb3467 Yeah unfortunately it's all one unit.
Curious can’t you just pull the fuse for the fuel pump?
If I recall correctly, it would skew the readings as the fuel injectors would still open causing a path for cylinder pressure to escape
So if I don’t have a turbo I just take off the heat shields and the manifold? I’m trying to change my exhaust manifold gasket btw and I’m not a mechanic I’m just trying to learn and save a couple bucks
Yep sounds about right, although you might have to disconnect the downpipe from the exhaust manifold in order to get it off.
Thanks brother. Your video seemed easy enough, I just wanted to be sure 👍 appreciate you 🙏🏻
Ohhhh i know that area. PRP doesnt mess around you got lucky sir! I had an 08 FBO and loved that car like nothing else. I have a Shelby GT500 now and still constantly go back to my Mazda videos. Your video makes me want to go find one!
Things could have definitely gone worse. Gotta be careful. Nice man, a GT500 is a beast of a car. The speed 3 is cheap reliable fun in a way, haven't had any big issues with it, aside from blowing the stock engine, but once built with forged rods and pistons and a good tune, these cars can last a while.
Nice video , I want to know forged rods stock piston. How much boost limit on stock piston. Thanks ♥
Thanks! My guess if around 500 whp. I've seen people on Instagram take it up to 500 even on stock rods.

@@WannabeTunerswhat’s rod bearings you use ? , I need to buy the rod bearings with bearings tang like you , but i cant find
@@xoxobitches_x666 If I recall correctly, OEM bearings were used.
Great video! So on a CCTA cylinder head, when it jumps time and bends the intake valves. You have to replace all the guides as well?
Yes because if the valves got hit by pistons there's a good chance the guides got damaged by the valve stems pressing up against them
Hey man. Do you know if it’s the same part for the gen 2? If so do you have a part number for the assembly
Hey man idk tbh. I would contact the parts department at your local Mazda dealership. Just give them your VIN number and they will be able to get the right one for your car ;)
Hi. In previous videos, your engine exploded. Why did this happen?
My suspicion was a failure of the connecting rod in cylinder 2. During the disassembly of the blown engine, we can see that the connecting rod sheared into pieces, so this was likely the first thing to let go before everything else got mangled. Interesting thing is that I had been tuning this car for years on the street without any issue. It was only when I took it to the dyno that it decided to let go.

Are you using boost based tuning or load based???
Purely boost based, but prior to the EWG setup I used to have load caps in place to keep things from going overboard. With the EWG, boost control is much better so I usually set load caps quite a bit higher than what's actually achieved so it doesn't impede on performance.

@davidg11134 Yeah 100%. The majority of the population aren't car people
If this happened in RowManYa... 1. they'd have all your car checked for non-standard wheels, window tint, med kit, fluid leaks, emissions compliance, engine modifications, suspension modifications, chassis modifications, non-matching paint, engine serial number (yes, around here the engine is not a spare part, and the engine serial# is written in the car registration papers), and so on; 2. give you a fine for reckless/aggressive driving (even there was no one around to be aggressive with, intimidate or endanger) and suspend your driving license for at least 30 days (or more if they find more serious stuff); 3. revoke your license plates and registration, so you'd have to tow your car from the scene, in some extreme cases they can impound your car, confiscate it and later after a trial which they will win 200% your car would end up as a undercover cop car whch they later use to harass people on the roads and then fine them for whatever they do as a response to the harassment; 4. call your girlfriend to come over or have another policeman go grab her and fine her too for filming in a public place and being part of your crimes. I reckon the same would happen in AssTrailYa. So the police lady was very nice, I kind of start to like the police in CanAidYa (without knowing other stories, of course :) ). Awesome vid shots, btw! :)
That's a scary thought and I consider myself lucky. Things could have definitely gone much worse.
Awesome video keep up the work man you still inspire me to finish my speed6 keep this platform alive 💪🏼
Thanks brother I hope things are going smoothly for ya
Looks like someone from KIA has that small dick energy and snitched you to the cops.
